White is just a colour. Becoming aware of how ignorantly white my life has been took 40 years. Even with multi-ethnic experiences, my ignorance and sensitivity to how others live in a predominantly white world has been sedated. As a Pakeha (a non-Maori New Zealander), I subconsciously – also consciously – claimed a self-granted superiority, living naïve to colour inheritance, naïve of many aspects of my clumsy ways. By sharing openly the ethnic and cultural differences that separate us, I have, and I am sure you can too, bred a stronger personal self.
