Learn and Pass It On: Shawn Mortensen

My heroes and their lesson… Zapatista women and their lesson of dignity.

In 1994 my personal and creative life were at a crossroads. I was doing a lot of work and travelling, and began to feel sad at the shape the ‘New World’ seemed to be taking. I felt a good portion of humanity was being left behind in our modern-techno worldwind. After a recent return from a trip to Mexico, I began to read about these poetic peasant Indian farmers and their democratic movement against 500 years of abuse. I decided to see for myself if what I had read was true. Unfortunately, conditions in Chiapas were as bad as they had said. I was utterly shocked at their resolve – to struggle for justice, even in the face of death – for as long as necessary to make the world a better place for their children. They had such great dignity – more than I’d ever seen anywhere.
