Jess Mills is a homegrown North London girl making music with the most exciting producers in the country. Jess uses “pretty” a lot as an adverb and says “yeah” and “like” and it makes her really likeable. In most clubby music videos there’s a sexy girl dancing to the beat – let’s just say Jess doesn’t need to call in anyone for that. She may be beautiful but her brains are what gets us, writing lyrics like, “‘Cus they are dragging my faith out of me. It was not for the taking…” Collaborating with UK producer Breakage, electronica artists Leftfield and most recently Maya Jane Coles, Jess is softly sung, easing into the notes the average person only attempts in the shower, and sometimes not even then. Currently pulling together her debut album with Island Records, her released tracks Vulture and Live For What I’d Die For layer soothing vocals about “everything from my biggest heartbreak to my greatest love” over deliciously laidback beats. “I was very self-conscious at school singing in front of people,” Jess admits, but who’d blame her – her classmate was Dynamite-tee-hee! When it comes to healthy living, Jess lives by the following mantra. “Everything in moderation, including moderation!” You’re more likely to find Jess in “some dirty warehouse party” than a sweaty gym. “A good night out partying sheds more pounds than you do in the gym anyway,” she concludes. We couldn’t agree more. She’s also a fully trained holistic massage therapist, “always good to have around if you need a rub down.” Yes we want to be her friend.
