Together with his five-man strong army of Get Me! apostles – Jet Letts, Russell Cliffe, Daniel David Freeman and Nick Jensen – Alex is working hard to bring jeez, jam and swag back to the masses. Bored of East London’s over-saturated scenes and debauched nightlife, GM was spawned to introduce lesser-known, up-and-coming DJs to the people. Gatherings are held without pretence, striving to be inclusive of anyone who walks through their doors. Whether you’re into psyche folk, jungle, roots, ragga or tropical house this eclectic night can, and will, cater to your every whim, whilst also introducing you to a host of exciting new tunes. Always the first to scout out the next best venue, GM locations are usually lo-fi, preferring to centre the crowd’s attention upon what happens onstage and behind the booth. The collective started life in a small room above The Pelican pub on West London’s All Saints Road. “We used to throw short film events with Tyrone Lebon and his dad Mark,” Alex recalls fondly. “It was a mix of original contributors, from Mark’s influential 80s film and club night Reely, together with a bunch of new filmmakers we were into. Today we always book acts that have a video element to their work. Christian AIDS, for instance, did a live visual set at the last one.”

Get Me! has expanded – due to popular demand – to pastures fresh, with nights popping up at the Shacklewell Arms, CAMP and Corsica Studios. While headlining acts have included The xx, Congo Natty, Zoo Kid, Trim, SBTRKT, Heartless Crew, Lady Chann, Sinden, Warrior Queen and Brenmar to name a small few. As a result, GM is fast gaining kudos from major record labels, who closely monitor the acts they support as a go-to source. A platform excited about quality, not cash. And illustrator Daniel David Freeman is the man responsible for immortalising this attitude on branded T-shirts and elaborately illustrated flyers. With plans to expand the outfit to accommodate a record label and releases from Dam Mantle and Jett Letts in the pipeline, this fun just got serious. So, if you’re looking for a night out that will leave you richer in mind rather than poorer and out of pocket, get yourself to Get Me! Geddit?
