Experimental electronic live art performer Connan Mockasin shares his tale of love and revenge in the floating world in The Pick Me Up Issue.
Josie, Te Awanga’s most prettiest swan with soft white feathers and slender legs, lived in the local duck pond. She was adored by two local water rats. Blain, a very quiet but friendly rat, and Simon, who was a real nasty bully. Simon hated Blain and both were in competition with each other to steal Josie’s tight heart.
One day out on the pond, Simon jumped on top of Blain causing a huge splash, soaking a small young duck named Liam. It wasn’t the first time Liam had been a victim of Simon’s splashing and by now he had had enough. Unfortunately for Liam, he was too small to splash back and was at a loss as to how to teach Simon a lesson.
However, that evening on his waddle back to his reeds, Liam stumbled across a note written on a small rolled-up lily pad. It was a love letter written by Simon to Josie. Liam picked the letter up with his beak and carried it home, where he thought hard all night of a way to use it against Simon. By morning he had come up with the perfect idea and set to work on the prank.
Liam noticed that on the letter it had Simon’s code address, which you need if you wanted to send messages on the water. Animals of the pond were very secretive and protective of this code and it was a breakthrough for Liam that he now had Simon’s.
Now knowing the code, and also knowing both Simon and Blain loved Josie and were after her tight heart, Liam wrote his own love letter back to Simon. But instead of pretending to be Josie, he pretended to be Blain.
Dear Simon,
After all this confusion of competing and fighting with you for Josie’s sweet tight heart, I’ve now realised it’s not her I am in love with. It’s you. I want to be with you Simon, not Josie. I’m gay!
Love and kisses,
Blain
After receiving the letter, Simon didn’t come out of his hole very often and from that day on there was no more splashing on the Te Awanga pond. The other animals began to wonder what had happened between the two water rats and rumours started brewing.
Blain didn’t seem to wonder or mind what had gotten into Simon all of a sudden. He smiled at Liam and Liam smiled back. Now was Blain’s chance to steal Josie’s tight heart.
