Looking and acting truly like a star who represents something real and diverse in the world of new music, Mykki Blanco’s a gay cross-dressing phenomenon who queries ideas on personal presentation and diversifies with some serious dialogue.

“I’m not trying to be a girl, I’m just trying to be a hot tranny,” Mykki explains in The Just Kids Issue. “I like my masculine features within the feminine image.” Originally hailing from California and now making New York a new home, she’s talking about her latest record Cosmic Angel (The Rebirth of the Showgirl), and says, “It’s all gay rap stuff. There are two records, this is the EP and this music is mostly my personality. Mykki Blanco is the more exaggerated version of myself, this is so much closer to who I am.” The other project, Mykki Blanco and The Mutant Angels, is another creative thread to Blanco’s outpourings, described as psych rock hip hop. Mykki’s journey concerns itself with something rather mystical, a persona that considers the many facets of what it is to be human, a part of society and thus confronts personal energies in constructive fashion; in other words, she tells it like it is. Unleashing a darker and reflective side Mykki Blanco really is “the fifth element,” and there’s more to come. “Nobody’s heard it, well fifteen New Yorkers saw the performance but not the world.” She doesn’t stop there, indeed words seem to be streaming out in a prolific style: “All this stuff has been happening, I think it’s great… I feel really blessed.”
