The ‘singing sands’ at Rio were first reported by Charles Darwin during his 1832 voyage on The Beagle. This rare phenomenon occurs when equal sized sand grains of quartz are moved against each other by wind and tides, creating a musical sound. The ‘singing’ is said to resemble the hum of gentle brass horns. The only thing that stops this noise is pollution; most similar beaches have been silenced by their accumulation of rubbish…
