Ryan McGinley creates colour photographs of nude figures in natural settings, jumping, biking, camping, and making general mischief, breaking down barriers between public and private spheres of activity. Every summer he embarks on a cross-country journey with a large group of fresh faces and creates extreme conditions and experiences so that his subjects lose themselves in the moment and are unaware of the camera, as when a group of young people climb naked into the upper branches of a tree or float underwater at night. His last solo show in New York featured surreal, color-saturated images of audience members at Morrissey concerts, taken over the course of 3 years all over the world. Ryan’s sublime treatment of travel, beauty, color, and youth continue to make him one of the most important photographers of our time.
