Nick Knight’s long history with i-D began in 1983, when he shot his first cover and served as Commissioning Picture Editor of the magazine. Spanning art, fashion and reportage, his work appears in British and French Vogue, Dazed & Confused, Visionaire and W. Nick has also collaborated with celebrated international designers including John Galliano, the late Alexander McQueen, Gareth Pugh and Yohji Yamamoto, as well as working on advertising campaigns for Christian Dior, Lancôme and Yves Saint Laurent. His books include Skinheads (1982) and, more recently, Nick Knight (2009). Nick’s work has been exhibited in institutions including the Hayward Gallery, the International Centre of Photography, the Saatchi Gallery, Tate Modern and V&A – and in 2010 he showed in Somerset House’s exhibition SHOWstudio: Fashion Revolution. Consistently championing film and moving image as the ideal medium for fashion in the digital age, Nick founded the award-winning fashion website SHOWstudio.com in 2000. For The 30th Birthday Issue, Pre-Fall 2010, he shot 200 portraits of fashion and popular culture’s most influential personalities in a live studio at Somerset House, live-streamed on SHOWstudio.com. The portraits, with cover stars Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell and Lady Gaga (all friends of the photographer) were a wink and a nod to i-D’s 5th birthday, The Grown Up Issue, in which he shot 100 iconic portraits.
