Judy Blame

Judy Blame is a stylist, jeweller, designer and art director. His aesthetic helped define i-D’s visual style throughout the 80s, with his signature cut-and-paste collage effect appearing on the covers of ‘The Madness Issue’, March 1986, and ‘The Surreal Issue’, April 1988. Since the early 80s Judy has been designing accessories endlessly, using scavenged chains, safety pins, rope, string, bottle tops, champagne corks, feathers and buttons; all re-worked and refined into fabulous fashions. Part of the Buffalo movement, Judy has styled, designed and art directed for numerous artists including Neneh Cherry, Björk, Boy George and Kylie Minogue; collaborated with designers including John Galliano, Richard Nicoll, Louis Vuitton and Comme des Garçons; and shot editorial with photographers Nick Knight, Juergen Teller, Mark Lebon and Jean Baptiste Mondino, amongst others. Judy says of his iconic name, “I wanted a lady name because everyone changed their name to one of the same sex, so I thought I’d confuse people. Judy was a nickname given to me by a friend and Blame just sprang to mind one day. It sounds like a trashy b-movie actress from the 50s – a bleached blonde tart who only made one film and never got anywhere – I like that.”
