Edward Enninful was born in Ghana and moved to London with his family as a young child. Possessing a natural flair for fashion, he was spotted on the tube, aged 16, by Nick Knight who consequently asked him to model for i-D. 1991, Edward was appointed Fashion Director of i-D, becoming the youngest ever Fashion Director of an international magazine. Enninful held this position until Spring 2011 when he was appointed Fashion and Style Director of W, whilst continuing to consult for i-D. His fashion campaigns have included Versace, Armani, Christian Dior, Mulberry and Lanvin. Edward has worked on a staggering number of i-D covers, the first of which was singer Rozalla shot by Hugh Stewart for The Identity Issue in October 1991. One of Edward’s most memorable covers was of Kristen McMenamy for The Alternative Issue, No. 150, March 1996 at a studio in North London. “We didn’t have any clothes,” Edward recalls, “so I drew a love heart on Kristen’s chest that said Versace, because Versace had just cancelled her from the couture shows” Enninful has worked with photographers including Craig McDean, Steven Meisel, Steven Klein, Mario Sorrenti, Juergen Teller, Terry Richardson, Alasdair McLellan, Emma Summerton and Richard Burbridge and has a close working relationship and friendship with i-D Beauty Director Pat McGrath, Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell who he continues to work with on a regular basis.
