Last night at Saint Laurent, Hedi Slimane celebrated youth culture, 90s grunge and star-crossed lovers Kurt and Courtney. With Jessica Chastain, Kirsten Dunst, Garrett Hedlund, Alison Mosshart, Jamie Hince and Sky Ferreria sat front row, the models stomped – literally – down the runway to Tidal Wave 13 by Thee Oh Sees. There wore baby doll dresses in floral, tartan, leather and lace. Nipped in at the waist with belts and teamed with sloucy mohair cardigans, the cuffs pulled over their hands. There was ripped denim, leopard print, flannel shirts and chunky biker boots with studded straps, and lots of them. The outerwear was particularly impressive. Favourites included a baby pink fur, a slender pin stripe blazer with streamlined lapels, a cropped black tuxedo jacket, duffle coat and leather trench. While a series of overcoats – when considered on their own – boasted such elegant simplicity they were guaranteed to fly off the shelves.
While there was undoubtedly something dark and brooding about the collection, there was something youthful and celebratory too. Yves Saint Laurent Rive Gauche, the ready-to-wear label launched by Yves in 1966 was synonymous with youth culture and it certainly smelled like teen spirit at Hedi’s second offering for the house today.
