If you build it, they will come. Carol Lim and Humberto Leon took themselves and the Kenzo brand on a pilgrimage for AW13, with a splendid, colourful collection inspired by the mysticism and layered structures of Asian temples. Opening with wrap skirts and over-sized bombers in luxurious gold jacquard, models shimmered down the catwalk like rich offerings from the Far East, precious gold scattered everywhere, from shiny leather peep-toe footwear to metallic lamé dresses and ribbon necklaces, rings, bracelets and earrings (all provided by jewellery designer and fourth generation member of the Fendi family, Delfina Delettrez.) Keeping within the ancient, mystical theme, the all-seeing eye motif, believed in the ancient world to offer spiritual protection, was emblazoned everywhere, from smartly tailored coats, jackets and trousers to casual sweatshirts and leather skirts. Energetic prints and textures, such as crocodile skin and metallic silk, gave a fun twist to the collection, and layered shapes were designed  to symbolise the steps and structures of ancient temples. Whilst the fun prints and silhouettes gave a clear nod to old traditions, garments, including oversized bombers, short skirts and white rimmed sunglasses maintained the cool, contemporary, street-style edge Lim and Leon are renowned for. Whether trekking through Nepal, China or just striding the streets of Paris and New York, the Kenzo girl was armoured and ready to take on the world – with one eye watching her all the way.
