Early this year, fashion went and got itself a highland fling, which lasted all the way through menswear and well into New York. But over in London and Milan, the love affair with checks seemed to fade, and you wondered if the romance was a short-lived one, after all. On Friday afternoon, in the tent in the Jardins des Tuileries in Paris, Yoshiyuki Miyamae brought back the passion with an Issey Miyake collection practically dedicated to the tartans of the highland. It came complete with something as rare as smiling models, who, for the finale, walked in a cross-type formation resembling the pattern of check, while Open Reel Ensemble – a Japanese group that combine old school reel-to-reel tape decks with computer technology to create a distinctive somewhat folky electronic sound – provided a soundtrack of electro bagpipes and general upbeat fun. Miyamae’s checks were mainly of the maxi variety, resembling the patterns and colours of landscapes as seen from the sky. Some were blown up in red and green on jumpers and trousers styled together, while the most striking interpretations appeared on two coats – one in pink colours, one in blacks – which were even superior to most of the check we’ve seen all season.
