i-D Music Editor Hattie Collins on George The Poet…
This 22 year-old is a socially motivated poet of exceptional ability. George’s ability to be brilliant without being boring, witty yet not worthy, is changing the perception of poetry as we know it. Seen already on the BBC, Sky, Formula 1 and Labrinth remixes, the North West born, Cambridge educated wordsmith is about to be take the art of spoken word to the masses.
My (abbreviated) life story is… I grew up on my estate, went to a grammar school. Over time I found it hard to turn a blind eye to social inequality and all that jazz. I started rapping, and now I do poetry.
My favorite word is… Fam. It’s just a convenient word. Whenever you don’t have anything to say it’s like ‘Fam…!’
I am at Cambridge studying… Politics, Psychology and Sociology. It all feeds directly into my content.
If I wasn’t doing this… I’d be doing poetry workshops with young people. That’s still the plan but it’s hard with so much on.
I’d describe myself as… Someone who tries to put things into perspective. I don’t have the answers but it’s important to slow down and think.
