i-D Music Editor Hattie Collins on Amplify Dot…
She dropped the V-bomb on Tinchy’s Game Over remix, and stood out on Ms. Dynamite’s Neva Soft refix. She’s also known for driving the banter bus at high speed over on Twitter. At three mixtapes deep, collabs with Kano, a deal with Virgin/ EMI, South London’s Amplify Dot aka Ashley Charles is standing at the forefront of British Female Rap.
My (abbreviated) life story is… Born, school, secondary school, college, uni, graduated – rate that – grind, grind, grind, rap, signed.
You should listen to my music because… I’ve actually got something to say. So much music is style over substance.
My hero in life is… My Mum. How sad is that? She’s one of those people who bends and bends and bends but never breaks. When you can go through so much and never break, she’s given me a real strength.
If I wasn’t doing this, I’d be… A journalist. Or an outlaw. I’ve been watching too much Breaking Bad.
My favourite word is… Nonchalant. If I had hair, I would toss it as I said it.
