Last night, Riccardo Tisci combined his love of fashion with live music to create one of Givenchy’s most spectacular shows. As guests gathered in a large warehouse on the outskirts of Paris, Antony Hegarty took to the stage with a live orchestra to sing ‘You are my sister’. The collection that followed was a celebration of what Riccardo called “gypsy grunge”. The mood – unapologetically feminine and romantic – still had that gritty Givenchy edge. Models wore their hair dazzling pink, orange or purple, and curled so tightly to their heads it more resembled a bouquet of roses rather than a barnet. Leather jackets were worked into the waists of floral dresses to add attitude (and volume). Burnished autumnal prints bought warmth to peplum skirts, jackets and tops. While dusky florals and paisley prints transformed biker jackets, blouses and skirts from ordinary into something heart-stoppingly unique. In the last few years, Riccardo has created an insatiable demand for his statement sweaters – and this season, the appearance of Bambi promised another garment guaranteed to fly off the sleeves. With Kimye, Sky Ferriera and Amanda Hearst sat front row, the show cemented Riccardo’s ever extending reach as a designer. Eight years as Creative Director has seen him not only establish his own distinct world but also his reputation as one of Paris fashion week’s brightest stars. This was a real standout show.
