For autumn/winter 13, Karl Lagerfeld continued on his journey to world domination with another stellar collection for Chanel. The show was set around a colossal globe spinning slowly on its axis. Illuminated with hundreds of interlocking ‘C’s, it pin-pointed the exact location of every Chanel boutique on the planet. It was an impressive concept, highlighting the French luxury house’s ever growing reach in emerging economies. The collection itself – shown to Daft Punk’s ‘Around The World’, how could it not be? – was a solid and succinct confirmation of their global standing. Chic, luxurious and brilliant, it offered everything you’d want from a Chanel collection. There were luxuriously thick tweeds, butter soft leather and accessories to make your mouth water. Silhouettes were kept long and lean, except on skirts where they kicked out playfully at the waist. Chanel is renowned for fabric development and this season the focus was firmly on texture. A black and white 3D floral embroidered coat was so exquisite it screamed out to be touched. While red and white flowers bloomed across silk dresses and blousons so dramatically they were almost life like. The final touch to Karl’s world? Electric pink, blue and orange fur hats, of course. A tongue in cheek nod to Anna Wintour’s iconic bob! Who said Karl Lagerfeld didn’t have a sense of humour?
