“From the dark, you go to the sun, that is important for me”, Olivier Rousteing told i-D. His autumn/winter 13 collection was colour happy with metallic fuchsia, emerald, silver, gold and blue lighting up the catwalk on 70s shouldered and belted jackets, tulip skirts and drop-crotched trousers. Following on from last season’s harlequin prints, he continued the diamond shape on quilted, lacquered leather and embellished jackets that plunged to the waistline. It was fearless and spacey, off the shoulder, off the wall and set to 70s era Led Zeppelin. Backstage Rousteing added depth to his feel-good, strong silhouette means strong woman collection, telling i-D, “there is a lot of 70s in this collection, because what I find amazing about the 70s is that the French couturiers wanted to put a lot of colour in their collections to move away from the crisis in France at the time. We are in a crisis now too, and I think people just want to dream and escape from it.” With big business earrings and slicked back hair, there was plenty of style in this crisis-aversion collection. Rousteing continues to use his youth to his advantage, following his instincts without fear, and it is refreshing to see. It was a confident, sensationally crafted collection bursting with energy, looking on the bright side.
