Checks, checks and more checks were the order of the day at Tommy Hilfiger, who dubbed his autumn/winter 13 collection as “Savile Row meets Ivy League”. It’s not the first time the American designer has celebrated his love of iconic British style on the runway, but this season it came together in imaginative – and covetable – new ways. Shown at New York’s Armory Building – which boasts a beautiful black and white check floor, naturally – houndstooth and Prince of Wales prints were blown up across blazers and pencil skirts, used as detailing on cashmere sweater dresses, and to add that little extra something, to the linings of luxurious wool overcoats and jackets. Checks soon moved to pin stripes, which added warmth to sharp tailoring in navy blue and maroon. “I wanted classics to receive an unexpected twist,” Hilfiger said before the show, and that they did, with standout pieces including a pin stripe bomber jacket with shaggy white shearling worn by i-D cover star Cara Delevingne, a black rubberised cable knit sweater dress and patent Penny loafers extended naughtily up the leg into knee high boots. With Julianne Moore and Rachel Zoe sat in the front row and a Rolling Stones soundtrack, this 60s-esque collection perfectly offered the “irreverent take on British sartorial tradition” he set out to achieve.
