In America, the saying goes, everything is bigger. It wasn’t a far off statement at Tommy Hilfiger’s men’s show Friday evening where a Park Avenue Armory – which had been given the Hogwarts set design treatment – played backdrop to the perhaps most check-tastic collection of an AW13 menswear season that’s already seen more checks than Prince Charles’ entire wardrobe. If there was a ‘supersize me’ option for the check that carries his title, this was the motto of Hilfiger’s collection. Maxi Prince of Wales check appeared throughout, in everything from suits to aviator jackets to knee-length coats, and when styled with a matching shirt and houndstooth trousers, the effect was particularly striking. As far as Hilfiger’s legacy goes, the Englishness – which was really what it was all about, a pin stripe segment in tow – blended in effortlessly with the preppy point of departure, which defines the Hilfiger universe. And at the end, Tommy himself emerged in a check jacket, the epitome of the American take on the British gentleman.
