Whether it was the Spanish reference or the big shoulders, Peter Pilotto took a turn for the temperamental in Monday morning’s AW13 show in London. “It all started with an image by El Greco,” Christopher de Vos told i-D backstage after the show. “Then we moved from there to the embroidery and all that. It’s always about colours. We’ll see something in a painting and we’ll love it. I guess it was trying to translate something classical in our time,” he said. Styled to precision by i-D Fashion Director Charlotte Stockdale, the collection tapped into a new, more red-blooded side to the designer duo and added a new dimension of power dressing to their repertoire. When combined with red, the masculine silhouette and the cropped jackets, which opened the show, hinted at a bullfighter’s uniform, while a coat in a grey check-ish print almost had a 40s’ menswear vibe about it. A new, geometrically cut take on the Peter Pilotto puffa jacket provoked ravenous glances from the label’s loyal fan base, but as things should be at Peter Pilotto, it were the pairs’ trademark insanely intricate prints that really stole the spotlight.
