Amongst famous Finnish things we count such runaway hits as the sauna, the ice skate and Marimekko. So it’s no wonder that the diligent team at MM6 looked to Finland for their AW13 collection, which showed as a static presentation in New York on Monday afternoon. The diffusion label of Maison Martin Margiela explored the 1952 Helsinki winter Olympics, which marked the post-war return of German and Japanese teams to the competition and saw the Soviet Union compete for the first time (thank you, Google). The result was a sportified cultural clothes medley, rich on athletic themes such as colour-blocked stripes, knee-high socks and rubber soles. But there were plenty of nods to the chilly Finnish latitudes in there as well, for instance the fluffy aviator jackets and pristine below-the-knee coats, one of which came in a particularly zesty yellow. Looks like the Finns just landed themselves another claim to fame.
