As far as relatable shows go, Felipe Oliviera Baptista couldn’t have hit more of a homerun when he showed a Lacoste collection inspired by ice in a post-blizzard New York covered in snow on Saturday morning. It was a pretty priceless twist of fate, but it wasn’t as if the obvious irony of his timing overshadowed the collection’s concise, directional finesse. In playing with varieties of petit pique – an old favourite of Rene Lacoste’s – Baptista constructed starched, architectural silhouettes, which merged the sportswear legacy of the label with its current designer’s modern, somewhat futuristic vision. A print based on images of icescapes seen from above underscored the collection’s theme along with transparent raincoats, which, when worn over dresses, created an ice-like effect, while cocoonish shapes – for instance in a highly boxy-shouldered two-tone top with an orange collar – worked Baptista’s fabrics to the absolute limit.
