Memento mori isn’t usually what comes to mind when you think of Jeremy Scott and his cartoon chic world of all things bonkers. But his monster motifs for AW13 weren’t all fun and games. A jumper with the slogan ‘Too weird to live’ touched upon a more melancholy side to Scott’s vivacious universe, while another carried the Circle-A symbol for anarchy and one simply read ‘Rescue me’. It was a reflection of the isolation that comes with being really, really fun in a world that doesn’t always embrace it, echoed in the scary but cute monsters that appeared throughout in prints, which hinted at the memento mori theme and resembled those monster stickers cool kids collected in the 80s and early 90s. Your average Jeremy Scott wearer (there is really nothing average about a Jeremy Scott wearer) is of course the epitome of a cool kid, or at least a kid that found a group of people who thought he/she was cool. It was reflected in a cast of some of the most charismatic models around, from Charlotte Free, Lindsey Wixson and Eliza Cummings to Miles McMillan, Sebastian Sauve and Travis Smith, and one Brahim Zaibat – Madonna’s dancer boyfriend – who walked his first show.
