Camp film geeks were sorely disappointed when it turned out that Jacquemus’ collection, entitled La Piscine, had in fact nothing to do with the Romy Schneider-starring sexual 60s drama of the same name. But what followed was just as good (if not as steamy), even if the title just referred to the show’s swimming pool venue on rue Alphonse Baudin. Wearing those protective blue shoe covers you get in homes-turned-museums and, well, public swimming pools, the congregated fashion press got their annual chlorine buzz on as Simon Porte Jacquemus presented his “nonchalant, cool Parisian” for AW13, as he called his girl backstage. The familiar 90s tones of Sash!’s Encore Une Fois echoed in the damp, tiled hall as masculine tailoring met sportswear in the colours of the Tricolore. A midriff-baring awkward white skirt suit worn with knee-high sports socks and pool sandals (as was the custom throughout the show) really hit the nail on the head, and brought to life the air nonchalance to which Jacquemus referred. It was a clever collection in both essence and production, and one that showed that the young French designer is very much in the swim of things.
