i-D Music Editor Hattie Collins on MckNasty…
One of nine children, this 27-year-old’s siblings include Labrinth and singer Shezar. After leaving school, MckNasty scored a job as Daniel Bedingfield’s drummer and has since played for Lady Gaga, Wretch 32 and Tinie Tempah. After making his name playing drums standing up with a backpack on, the Hackney singer, drummer, DJ and songwriter is readying his own solo album.
My (abbreviated) life story is… I grew up in church listening to musicians, learnt drums from my uncle, got a bit older, left school, started playing with stars, had enough of that and here I am now. I stand up to play because… I went away to Europe for two years on tour and when I came back home all the young drummers were sounding very different. Drumming had evolved and it kind of freaked me out. I thought, ‘I need to stand up and change the whole vibe.’ 2013 is my year because… I’ve got a lot to prove in terms of bringing music back to the live element. I want music to be something you can feel.
