Diesel are bringing sexy back, in a very big way. The autumn/winter 13 Black Gold collection waved goodbye to Sophia Kokoslaki, who held the creative director title for three years and welcomed in Andreas Melbostad as head of the brand. The Norwegian designer – formerly a consultant at Roberto Cavalli and Creative Director of Phi – has big plans for the Italian powerhouse that start by stripping it back to its cool girl core. Tailoring was key to the transformation and came in the form of structured blazers, low-slung trousers – all skinny, of course – and belted overcoats that added a new confidence and sophistication to the Diesel woman. There were cropped boxy jackets in black and white leather and wool, but the real star of the show was the studding which added a punk edge to biker jackets, thigh-skimming dresses and knitwear. The show notes described it as “A need for speed” and the gunmetal grey trench coat, heavy with studs, zips and attitude, that closed the show took Diesel strutting confidently into the future.
