Joseph Altuzarra brought us back to basics and took us to the street with his more minimal but by no means plain AW13 collection. Abandoning the embellishments and embroidery his name has become synonymous with, to focus on texture and tailoring, Altuzarra gave his girls bolder shoulders, vinyl corsets and sexy, smudged eye shadow, like they’d just been caught in the rain. Pre-empting the New York big freeze that’s gripped fashion week, models doubled up on jackets and strutted their stuff in the fluffiest of coats and trending giant mittens. Taking inspiration from the street, the Altuzarra woman radiated biker vibes with cropped vinyl (unlike leather, this is waterproof) boleros and gunmetal buttons, and power-dresses, emphasising her hourglass figure with cinched in waists, padded hips and sharp shoulders. The fully fitted leather dresses could have been female superhero attire, something Xena: Warrior Princess might wear on a night out. Strong, seductive and sassy, Altuzarra’s right up our street.
