Music, as Madonna would have it, makes the people come together. Especially her diehard fans, who have formed a special bond because of the star and her tunes. If there was ever a fashion parallel to the passionate groupie spirit of singers and their fans, Hedi Slimane stands out as the ultimate star in the equation. Sunday night they came together for his debut menswear show for Saint Laurent Paris, his ready-to-wear label under the Yves Saint Laurent umbrella. And his followers got the hits they wanted: from the ultra-skinny ripped jeans and leather trousers to a potpourri of rock ‘n’ roll jackets, all reflecting the bohemian ‘LA cool’ vibe that Hedi Slimane has come to represent. Long schoolboy scarves – next to the svelte silhouette – paid tribute to the trademark aesthetic, which catapulted Slimane into fashion fame during his residency at Dior Homme, while the presence of female models on the catwalk cemented his androgynous signature. At the end of the catwalk, a giant waltzer constructed of loudspeakers spun to the tones of a rocky track, while the Slimane boys – a special cast of willowy underground band members – walked in a new era of Saint Laurent.
