Michael Jackson’s costumier Dennis Tompkins once described the look he created for the star as ‘Liberace goes to war’. Roberto Cavalli famously designed some of MJ’s later looks, and in Sunday’s menswear presentation – the second instalment under the creative direction of his son Daniele Cavalli – held as a soiree in the penthouse of the Galleria Passarella in Milan, it was obvious that Daniele, having grown up with the likes of MJ on speed dial, had created a larger-than-life male dresser, not dissimilar to The King of Pop or any other king for that matter. And yet, beneath the gilded collars, print tuxedos, and Louis XIV jewellery, there was a younger spirit present. Could it be that Daniele, like his father, is designing for himself? “For me it’s the most important thing! That’s why I was very happy when I started doing this label, because it’s a label that permits me to do things that men are usually really scared about,” Daniele told i-D. “I want to create something that’s classic and wearable for a man but with all those Cavalli elements. I think the label I design for is very centered around women, and for me it was really important to create a man, who would be the right man to stand next to this wonderful woman.”
