It’s really been Scotland’s season this season, with all the check and highland gear a heritage heart could wish for and somewhere in the Scottish hills, a bunch of kilt-wearing clansmen are bound to be looking sceptical watching this fashion circus unfold. After all, Scottish dress isn’t a fad. It’s a lifestyle. And so, there was a rightful superiority in place when Pringle of Scotland – the arch Bruce of highland high fashion – presented their AW13 collection in Milan, under the creative direction of Massimo Nicosia. Pringle can throw around as much argyle and tartan as they want without it ever looking forced, but the collection really worked because Nicosia did the opposite. Sticking mainly to burgundy, navy, and grey, he integrated subtle hints of the Scottish trademarks around the AW13 collection, for instance via a pale grey check on a matching jumper with trousers, or in the argyle diamond quilting on a jacket. A charcoal leather coat with an aubergine inside was a particularly modern take on highlandy outerwear, and paired with the expert knitwear that made the Scottish brand one of the most famous in the world, there wasn’t a dry eye in the land of the bagpipe.
