If cleanliness is next to godliness, Heaven’s got a room with a view reserved for Neil Barrett. “It was going back to my roots, more than anything. I feel very comfortable doing this type of post-minimal look,” Neil told i-D backstage after the show last night in Milan. And while Barrett may have taken his point of departure in minimalism, what he managed to do with it was anything but minimal. Between the pristine simplicity, the intricate materials and the quiet styling – say, a thick black satin bomber jacket worn over what appeared to be a black ponyskin top and tight black velvet trousers – there was a sense of calm to the collection, which was only magnified by the mile-long catwalk and its backdrop of the massive Baroque pillars of the Palazzo del Senato, which added an element of romanticism to the mood. In its own very clean way, it was really quite grand, and for a collection that made no secret of its nod to the 90s, the feeling of newness was striking.
