Moschino. Milan, 14/01/13

Observing some of fashion’s more waist-conscious show-goers staring at the twelve-course menu placed at each cover at Moschino’s AW13 show at Milan’s legendary Giannini restaurant was rather a priceless prelude to a collection, which drew on the flamboyance of Italian formalwear. One exit in particular – trousers in red and green maxi-check styled with a check-lapelled blazer worn over a crimson polo neck – completely captured the image of the Italian gentleman at lunch. Guests were never served that twelve-course dinner, but the Moschino show was every bit the tasting menu of what the house’s menswear designer, Bill Shapiro, has to offer. For a Moschino collection, it was less bubbly than usual. It wasn’t so much a toned down take on Moschino as much as a new interpretation of the playfulness of the brand. For AW13 it seems the house that last season called itself ‘the funniest brand in the world’ in a Warhol-esque can print has cultivated its sense of humour to a new, more indirect degree. Fine dining, after all, is a grown-up’s discipline and over the course of that 30-minute liquid dinner, Shapiro did a good job at proving that Moschino can easily be well-behaved enough to dine at the main table. No doubt the house would make for an excellent date.
