McQ SS13: Matthew Bell

The Man in the Plastic Mask.

Like the beautiful guests of a plastic masquerade ball, Matthew Bell and Manon Leloup are the protagonists of the SS13 McQ campaign shot to magical, monochrome perfection by David Sims. Creative Director Sarah Burton creates a film-noir Moulin Rouge with white suits, black corsets and translucent masks distorting and covering her subjects’ pretty faces. A collection inspired by erotica and Vargas’ pin-ups, Manon lounges gracefully and seductively in patent leather, on silk sheets with a wicked joker smile while Matthew stares on through spellbound eyes.

We took five with Matthew Bell to get to know the man behind the mask.

How old are you? I am 19 years and 141 days old!

Where in the world are you right now and what have you done today so far? I am currently in Paris. I shot a lookbook today and then sat in McDonalds for the free wifi.

Where are you originally from, what’s it like there? I am originally from Liverpool (“THE BEATLES” I hear you scream!!). It’s actually changed loads over the past five years or so and every time I do get home I find the people much nicer than London. Northern people.

What was it like shooting with David Sims for McQ? It was a pleasure to shoot with David Sims as he’s half a scouser too AND supports Liverpool F.C. So of course, boys being boys, football was a big talking point! It was great to see what’s behind David’s work because this is my first campaign and you get a bigger understanding of what actually goes on, not just the photographs at the end. There are set designers, dressers, runners, make up artists etc. all working for the same final product. Hold tight team McQueen and team Sims. Hopefully we shall collaborate again soon!

How would you describe the attitude of McQ as a brand? McQ is fresh. It’s got that young vibe but of course it has its more classical moments. This campaign evokes its attitude with the tailored suit and the see-through mask

Tell me about your band… Unfortunately due to the nature of the job I have been unable to keep the band up, however check out GO FIASCO my old band!! I play the saxophone. Although it has been too long since I last played properly.

What’s in your pocket? Lindt Lindor chocolate wrapper from Christmas.
