Less is more. Subtle is sexy. Minimal is manly. Margaret Howell’s AW13 collection was as faultless as her SS13 collection, her AW12 collection, and every collection before that. Each season, she perfects her art, quietly experimenting with collars, linings and toggles to make clothes that models feel comfortable wearing and won’t mock on their way out. In Navy berets, blue collar shirts with faint double pockets and straight cut ties, the workwear uniform was casual, but neat. Jumpers came with wide roll necks, zipped up collars and grey printed argyle, with the odd breton stripe in tonal grey thrown in for good practice. Pea coats, anoraks and blazers reminded us of the season, as did the very grey colour palette. Howell always does what she does best, thinking practically and honouring the ‘made to wear’ aesthetic she has built her sensationally successful brand upon. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it.
