James Long injected some eccentricity into his AW13 collection, taking a step away from the more refined look he’s known for and playing about a bit, experimenting with his craft.
Here, i-D count down our favourite elements of the show.
The Pink Flamingo. Embracing the 80s in all its glory, Long beaded a giant Pink Flamingo onto a thick woolly sweater. The idea of this sounds garish but it was executed beautifully.
The Hollywood Eccentric. Long cited actor and director John Waters as his inspiration. In celebration of the Hollywood legend, he injected some oddities into the collection. Silhouettes were more relaxed, colours were brighter and print and pattern much bolder than in past collections.
The bomber. The bomber jacket was key. The collection featured eight in total, each offering a different take on the classic. Quilted leathers,
embroidered and contrasted fabrics, slick subtle zippers. These
jackets all worked perfectly into the drama of the collection but worn
separately, would add an expense and luxury to a casual look.
The Dad Jumper. Long is known for his knitwear, he even worked it into last
season’s summer collection. His knits always have personality and this
time he upped the ante with full on 80s threads and patterns.
Shiny Happy People. Each look had a super shiny quality to it. Particularly the trousers with a plastic finish. That, teamed with a relaxed shape and elasticated cuff, created a divine Leisure Suit.
