Trust an Italian to take a Nordic reference and heat it up, even if said heat is still considered pretty cold in Italian measures. For AW13 Silvia Venturini Fendi tackled the cold north – Iceland to be exact – and it was a chill pill that brought the temperature in the huge venue to another level. A succession of models marched up and down staircases in a high-speed loop (“Got my exercise for the day,” one of the British boys quipped backstage), their Icelandic-inspired outerwear – a heavy black sheepskin coat stood out in particular – bouncing to the beat of the slick soundtrack. In her use of khaki or perhaps light petroleum colours, Fendi nailed the feeling of the Icelandic landscape, and fused with the check-on-check styling of shirts and ties – a first during this check-tastic season – it created a new sense of the Nordic minimalism that fashion’s been drawing on for so many seasons. It was a show executed to perfection.
