Exclusive Mix: Urulu

Urulu delivers a never-before-heard medley of his latest and most salacious musical influences ahead of tomorrow’s MIX night. Enjoy 47 minutes of unadulterated fun.

LA local Urulu has a sound that is unmistakably reminiscent of the early 90s era of House music. He explains his sound simply: “It’s all down to the rawness of the production, the imperfections”. With forthcoming releases on Dirt Crew, Exploited and London label Need Want, Urulu has been tipped by many as a one to watch for 2013. i-D took time out to talk shop with the hi-hat loving retro futurist and secured an outstanding exclusive mix, for our ears only.

Where are you right now? Sitting in my kitchen, watching my roommate cook me dinner. Thanks Graham.

What are you wearing head to toe? Socks (black), Levi’s (black), tie dye tee, beanie (black).

What was the last text message you sent? “Naw, no plans let’s meet up”

What does your studio set up look like? It’s definitely not impressive. More like my laptop and a pair of headphones right now. I used a Roland Mc303 for a good amount of drum samples on my later EPs though. That was cool.

Do you take any of the studio kit on the road? Right now, no, unfortunately. Kind of regretting not bringing any gear over with me. Luckily I have some friends who don’t hate me enough to not lend me their studio.

What does a typical Urulu DJ set consist of? A lot of music from friends really. I’d say about 80% of the stuff I play is from people I know. The rest toggle between David Guetta remixes and my own productions.

If you could play B2B with any artists dead or alive, who would it be and why? David Bowie. I don’t have a clue why but I really liked his set in the Labyrinth.

You’re playing i-D’s MIX night at XOYO this Thursday! Are you looking forward to it? What does London represent for you? Yes, of course. Big fan of the magazine, and have heard great things about XOYO, so my expectations are high. London in general is such a contrast from major state side cities. There’s such a massive following here. Literally every night there’s someone credible playing. It’s like a gift and a curse, because half the time you can’t be bothered because that same person is playing the week after.

You’ve been picked by a few as this year’s ‘one to watch’. But who is your 2013 ‘one to watch’? Cassio Kohl is a safe bet. He’ll be releasing the first EP on Amadeus in 2013, with a follow up remix release featuring reworks from myself and Yung Huerta. This EP will really solidify the label as a whole in the New Year. I can guarantee that.

What was the last track you bought? I bought the Nicholas/Morning Factory ‘Looking’ 12” finally.

Most recent guilty pleasure? The new Rihanna album.

As we move into 2013 what are your highlights of last year? Justin Bieber & Selena Gomez, the Internet, 5 hour energy being invented, marijuana in pasta form, dog shaming, tapatio on things, and this guy.
