‘I Heart Classics’ was the name of Christopher Bailey’s collection for Burberry Prorsum, which showed yesterday afternoon in Milan, and for a season that already seems hell-bent on making us wear checks again, it was only appropriate. Bailey loves nothing more than a headlong dive into the memory tank of Burberry’s incredible legacy and with its beige trench coats, duffle coats and slick tailoring, his AW13 collection was the ultimate tribute – well, perhaps with the exception of the heart print jumpers, an actual part of the collection, the undoubted commercial success of which will cement the loyalty of Bailey’s diehard fans. It was literally a declaration of love to the old English house. If the backdrop at the venue, which featured a combined London and Milan skyline, suggested that Bailey was adding some Southern spice to the British splendour, it came in the shape of the collection’s animal prints. An unexpected element, their intricacy made for one of the most beautiful components in the collection.
