“I wanted to have very different songs that showed all the things we come from. It was all about juxtaposing things that may not necessarily fit together. It was for me also what the look was about.” Raf Simons
Runway shows are intense, next level experiences. Booming bass lines, breath taking models and the fashion world’s most powerful players bring the kind of drama only an exclusive few are invited to enjoy. The relationship music and fashion share is intrinsically bound, directly influencing trends played out on the high-street and via the radio. Hear the standout soundtracks that fuelled the menswear season just passed, as selected by the i-D team.
Dior Homme: “Kris Van Assche has never played a Dior Homme soundtrack I didn’t like, and this season’s remix of the Anne Clark schlager Our Darkness from 1984 will go down in my iTunes history as one of his most superb (well, next to the Gater’s Taboo remix from SS12). With Anne Clark’s mad rhetoric and the frenzied beat, this AW13 soundtrack was totally invaluable to the show and gave Kris’ sci-fi pentagrams an intriguingly dark undertone. The title says it all.” Anders Christian Madsen, Fashion Features Editor
Raf Simons: “A collection inspired by the modern man with a finale by the epitome of the modern man, Mr David Bowie.” Elgar Johnson, Fashion Editor
Craig Green: “I remember being completely obsessed with this HEALTH song, which Craig Green played at his AW13 show, when I discovered it a couple of years after it came out in 2007. Sitting there at the show, all I kept thinking was how amazing it must have been for those models to walk to this roaringly aggressive but still really melodic synth track. It really put the icing on the cake that was Craig Green’s gloomy collection. Also, there’s something rather ironic about a band called HEALTH writing a song called Die Slow.” Anders Christian Madsen
Melinda Gloss: “New Parisian DJ and production duo Get A Room! are Aurélien Haas et Jeff Lasson who had an amazing 2012 with a residency on the biggest sun-deck in the French capital, Sundays at Wanderlust. For 2013 they opened with this sultry and louche mix for menswear label, Melinda Gloss, featuring a heavy, heavy bassline from Daniel Avery and ending on a class cut from the Steve Reich Ensemble.” Sarah Hay, Paris Editor
Astrid Andersen: “The Freshest of show soundtracks this season, Brave, Tough and Loaded with attitude, just how Astrid likes it.” Elgar Johnson, Fashion Editor.
