The end of the world is nigh, next Friday actually, according to the Mexican Mayans. CSM graduate Mingki Cheng designs oversized sportswear for enhanced physical performance. If you survive this season, dress like a warrior for the next.
Graduating with a degree in fashion design and marketing from Central Saint Martins this year, Mingki Cheng is the business minded creative with a wild imagination. Growing up in the financial district of Hong Kong, 25-year-old Mingki was raised in a particularly commercial environment and responded to the lack of artistic creativity around him by drawing and designing fantastical outfits for life in another world. Naming his debut collection ‘Doomsday Survival’, Mingki worked with a rich range of textures and researched animals’ external protective systems and advanced sportswear technology; so nature provided the inspiration for materials and athletes influenced the lines and silhouettes for each garment. Making statement plastic fur the signature feature of his Doomsday collection, working with a sci-fi like palette of lemon, peach metallic, pink, green and chrome black, Mingki is a brave innovator with a bold vision. i-D arrived at his studio to see inside his world.
