As far as sports stars go, skaters take the prize in the swag department. They’ve got an entire lifestyle dedicated to them, fashion named a trouser after them, and Avril Lavigne had her finest lyrical moment singing about them. This month, the nifty folk at Nixon are releasing The Soundclash Project. A collaboration with Plan B, the survival kit for skaters comes in five special (and very limited) editions dedicated to each of Plan B and Nixon’s five top skaters – Ryan Sheckler, Paul Rodriguez, Torey Pudwill, Danny Way and Colin McKay – and includes a pro model board with pre-applied custom grip tape, wheels and a mobile speaker. i-D online caught up with Ryan Sheckler, skater sensation and star of MTV’s 2007-2009 show Life of Ryan, and quizzed him about the Plan B x Nixon Soundclash Project.
What made you want to do this with Plan B and Nixon? I wanted to do this with them because I’m passionate about Nixon and Plan B. They are two sponsors that work very well together and this was a great idea.
The line includes a mobile speaker. How important is music when you skate? Music is very important when I skate. It can determine your whole session, get you amped and keep you skating. It’s cool that Nixon wanted to make these speakers for the Plan B team.
What artists are you listening to at the moment? Attila.
In the promo video for The Soundclash Project, the red of the Sheckler skateboard is compared to red lips. Why did you choose this red colour? I have Erik Bragg to thank for that. Red is the colour I’ve skated in since I was 6 years old. And who doesn’t like a nice pair of lips?
How big a role does fashion play in your life? It’s not that important – I mostly wear what I skate in. When I have to go out to a nice dinner or function, I’ll throw on a suit.
How do you think skater style has developed over the past couple of years? I think everyone still has their own style. I don’t think I’ve changed much.
What are you most excited about right now? My China trip with the Plan B team and the Sheckler Foundation’s BE THE CHANGE project we’re working on right now.
In the spirit of i-D’s current issue, The Role Model Issue, who is your role model? My dad because he never gives up.
