Broadcast for the very first time from 6pm on August 16th 2002, The BBC initially launched Radio 1Xtra after identifying the distinct lack of playtime commercial radio stations were allowing urban music. Satisfying the UK’s insatiable demand for breaking and classic hip hop, grime, bassline, garage, dubstep, drum and bass, UK funky, dancehall, soca, reggae, gospel music, bhangra and R&B music, key 1 Xtra presenters Mistajam, Sarah Jane Crawford, Charlie Sloth and Twin B currently drive this revolutionary musical movement that has helped changed the face of modern music. Working hard to promote the acts they discover, believe in and adore, each DJ is superiorly informed and passionate about what they do. Curating each show in a unique manner, constantly coming up with innovative ways to introduce new music to the masses, each presenter’s vibe and fast paced energy is infectious. i-D online caught up with Sarah and Twin B ahead of Monday’s first 1Xtra live event, at which Trey Songz, Tulisa, Wizkid, Angel and Kendrick Lamar will all be playing, to chat about the future of radio and the history of their success.
