Early Friday morning, the i-D team touched down in Beijing, excited and ready to start set up of the travelling SOUL i-D exhibition – the fifth one of its kind. First on the to-do list was Liulichang Street, a traditional shopping area where flickering red lanterns hang from trees like descending UFOs and the stores sell everything from pottery to panda hats to fried insects on sticks. After making a few necessary impulse purchases (including silk flower shoes and bunny ear hair clips) the final destination and perfect end to the evening was Capital M, a restaurant that offered delicious food and sensational views over the historic Tiananmen Square. The exhibition has taken temporary residence at the Enjoy Museum, a spacious gallery in the city’s 798 art district. Catching our eye on arrival was a giant billboard outside, of Chen Man’s Role Model Issue cover of Chinese superstar Fan Bingbing.
With all the panels nearly hung and the centre piece ‘eye’ close to completion, we’re starting the countdown… Stay tuned.
