Umit Benan loves to travel, so for SS13 he recreated a graffitied rooftop and transported the Trussardi woman to the hustle and bustle of Manhattan, New York. Under Benan’s creative direction the Italian luxury brand has repositioned itself as a go-to-label for women who like masculine clothing with an elegant edge. This season, while there were still men’s style suits in burgundy and navy blue to choose from, Benan also introduced a quirky 1980s inspired femininity too. There were canary yellow pleated trousers and polo shirts, a boxy yellow shirt dress complete with shoulder pads and pleated skirt, and a shiny dropped shoulder bomber jacket with white gilet that reminded us of hanging out with our friends after school. Model’s fringes had been bluntly severed above the eyebrows (another 80s reference/ how many times did you disastrously cut your own fringe?), while sunglasses were gold, shiny visors. Favourite, and perhaps most wearable aspects of the collection were the leather pieces. Leather panelled skirts, shirts, jackets and tea dresses, in a darker, more somber colour palette of burgundy and navy blue, were more elegant and mature, and for that reason more desirable too. After all, while it’s great to go on a journey, you don’t want to look out of place once you get there.
