In the ostentatious surrounds of the spring/summer 13 Fashion East show space, a decadent gentleman’s club off Piccadilly, Ryan Lo conjured up a dark disco of bubblegum ballerinas and fuchsia princesses illuminated under coloured gels – the sort of place where Lana Del Rey should be singing her heart out. One of Ryan’s girls wore a super furry Cruella de Ville coat that could’ve been stitched out of 101 crimson muppets, another wore a cropped jacket of opalescent candy pinks, knitted together and tied with a red ribbon, and others refracted the light through mirror-ball fabrics and dazzling metallics. If you wished to chirpse these models, you just had to follow the trail of sparkling confetti and shimmering glitter to the end of the rainbow. Dreaming up lush knits out of lycras and tulles, flavoured with strawberry Pocky smocking, embroidery and appliqué, Ryan’s come from Hong Kong to take us on an exotic journey through coral seas. His inspiration, he says, was “sex! And libertine ideas, and Studio 54 and the 70s, and a bit of Yayoi Kusama and modern Japanese, and a touch of Wong Kar Wai and In The Mood for Love.” Ryan Lo’s super sexy collection was styled by one of i-D’s hottest contributors, Erika Kurihara, and we’re totally crushing on it…
