The Rodarte sisters, Kate and Laura Mulleavy, went back to the future this season with a sci-fi warrior collection for the modern world. Backstage, Kate and Laura told i-D, “We were inspired by fantasy role-playing games.” Not the state of the art Cosplay games of today, but rather a “medieval fantasy world”, where garments cocoon the body like protection and textures are spliced up and pierced together like sartorial armour platelets. In fact, texture was integral to the entire collection, and backstage there were a whole host of tactile delights to run your hands over; leather, horsehair, lace, silk, boucle wool… Favourite pieces included the 80s heavy metal jackets, with the elaborate waist length fringing, the sci-fi footwear – you can’t help but walk with purpose in those beauties – and the leather trousers, sliced up and stitched together with fine rope. Whether they were inspired by the 1970s warriors in Dungeons and Dragons (as some editor’s suggested), or the more recent success of HBO’s Game of Thrones, when Karlie Kloss breezed down the runway in a peach Princess Leia dress, corseted at the waist, one thing was clear, the sister’s rocked it this season in a big way.
