Ralph Lauren’s spring/summer 13 collection had a warm, laid back Mediterranean vibe that immediately felt at one with the warm NY weather outside. “I am forever inspired by far away exotic places,” Mr Lauren tweeted to his 71,000 followers before the show. “I may never have been there but in my imagination it’s real.” As his models sashayed down the runway dressed in elegant black jodhpurs, ruffle shirts and thick swathes of brightly coloured beads, they evoked such a sense of time and place, you could almost smell the warm, citrusy Spanish air. There were black matador jackets with exquisite leather piping, turquoise fringed shawls, floor length floral dresses and Mexican striped blankets that doubled up as shoulder bags, capes and sundresses. Scarves knotted at the neck and black sombreros tilted casually on the head added to the Spanish air. We particularly loved the bright red bandeau dress that had just the right swish at the waist to be both fun and feminine. Ralph Lauren might be the king of American style, but as this collection proves, he certainly knows how to rock a European edge too.
