Marc Jacob’s SS13 collection started – bang on time as always – with a girl in a short blonde wig, a black and white striped T-shirt and a pair of knickers. Her elfin beauty resembled that of Andy Warhol superstar and NY party girl Edie Sedgwick and set the tone (and decade) of what was to come. Set to ‘Copped It’ by The Fall, Marc explored hypnotizing stripes at break-neck speed. Elsewhere Mickey Mouse made a cheeky appearance on a cropped sweater, satin ruffle neck dresses added a touch of period humour and ankle-skimming jersey dresses were brought to life with wonderfully undulating black, burgundy and nude swirls. As the collection progressed, so did the stripes. Running vertically, horizontally, diagonally, up, over and across the body they added a graphic intensity to elegant overcoats, silk pajama suits and all-in-ones. Like an Escher artwork, or Magic Eye painting, the result was trippy and hypnotic and drew you right in before bam! It was over just like that.
